Vacation Weight Gain: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

Holidays offer a welcoming break from the usual routine, allowing you to explore new places and enjoy different foods. Vacation weight gain may occur if you haven’t been physically active, no matter how much attention you have paid to travel nutrition. Although vacation weight gain can be a concern for weight watchers, a small increase on the scale shouldn’t be a reason for worry. Disrupted schedules with changes in eating, activity patterns and sleep, during a trip can lead to weight gain on vacation. Read ahead to understand these reasons in detail, along with smart ways to stay on track, healthy travel tips, quick hotel room workouts and other aspects. Following them will help you stay fit while travelling, enjoy and maintain your health goals.

Is Vacation Weight Gain Inevitable?

No, vacation weight gain is not an inevitable aspect. By adopting healthy travel tips which allow you to try local dishes, while paying attention to portions, hunger cues, sleep and movement, you can have better weight control.

Common Reasons People Gain Weight on Vacation

  • Over eating: One large meal isn’t the only reason for weight gain on vacation. It happens due to eating more frequently or in larger portions than usual, for example, at buffets. Meals high in fats or sodium, desserts, high calorie snacks, juices and drinks also contribute to weight gain.[1] Choose foods wisely, eat slowly and in small portions, and exercise control of hunger cues as a part of travel nutrition.
  • Less Physical Activity: Long flights, road trips, rainy days, and fatigue after sightseeing can reduce your physical activity. To stay fit while travelling, you need to find activities that naturally fit into your vacation. It could be as simple as using stairs where possible, walking through a new city, or swimming at the hotel or beach, which helps you remain active.[2]
  • Alcohol Consumption: The extra calories apart from food contributing to vacation weight gain can also come from alcoholic drinks. Alcohol provides about 7 kcal per gram. Besides, soda or syrup when used, adds even more sugar and calories. If not consumed in moderation, alcoholic drinks may influence appetite, and also the accompanying food choices, affect your body weight.1
  • Poor Sleep: Late night dinners, alcohol, time zone changes, long travel days, jet lag and unfamiliar sleeping environment can affect sleep quality and hunger cues.1 Poor sleep can affect appetite, energy levels, mood and make food decisions harder to manage. To avoid weight gain on vacation, make sure you avoid heavy meals and alcohol close to bedtime that can interfere with sleep.

Smart Ways to Stay on Track While Traveling

  • Build balance throughout the day with structured mealtimes (3 main meals and 2 healthy snacks) and follow healthy travel tips.
  • Eat at regular intervals to prevent hunger pangs and overindulgence later.
  • Look for simple ways to create a well-balanced plate. At restaurants, pay heed to the following aspects:[3]
  • Opt for clear or broth-based soups without croutons and fried toppings.
  • Fill half of your plate with vegetables and 1/4th portion each of whole grain cereals and protein sources (paneer/tofu/edamame/soya/egg/chicken/ fish).
  • Choose grilled, baked or roasted options and recipes which are not greasy over fried foods.
  • Order sauces and dressings on the side.
  • Stay well hydrated as proper hydration helps you distinguish between actual hunger and thirst. Fresh lime water without sugar, buttermilk, coconut water or unsweetened (iced tea, cold coffee) can be preferred over sugary and aerated drinks.[4]
  • Remain physically active and explore the opportunity to move in ways that feel fun instead of forced.

Healthy Travel Snack Ideas

Incorporate the following healthy snack ideas that are shelf stable and support your travel nutrition.

  • Pack an assortment of unsalted nuts and dried fruits like almonds, walnuts, pistachios, peanuts, and dates. They provide energy and are rich in healthy fats, antioxidants, vitamin E and vitamin B6. As they are high in calories, opt for a fistful at once.
  • Make your own trail mix of different seeds such as pumpkin, sunflower and flax seeds which are rich in magnesium, zinc, omega-3 fats and vitamin E. Grab a small quantity of seed mix (1 tbsp) to fight mid-drive fatigue.
  • Take along fresh fruits such as apples, oranges, pears, or banana. They are rich in fiber, hydrating and are easy to carry travel snacks for long drives.
  • Carry some homemade snacks like roasted makhana, kurmura chiwda, plain popcorn or whole wheat khakra. These are light options that won’t make you feel sluggish and are better than packaged snacks.

Quick Hotel Room Workouts

Begin with a few minutes of warm up such as arm circles, shoulder rolls, marching in place and torso twists before trying these hotel room workouts.[5] They don’t require much time and also help you stay fit while traveling.[6]

  • 20 step-ups onto a chair or a foot stool (10 per each leg).
  • 10 squats. Lower your hips with your chest lifted, go down until your thighs are parallel to the floor or as low as per comfort. Press through your heels to return to standing.
  • 10 Burpees (stand with hands stretched above your head, drop to a crouch position, then hop into a plank, push up and spring to feet again.

What to Do After Returning Home

A few extra pounds you see on the weighing scale can be a result of temporary water retention and vacation food intake.[7] Hence, most of the extra weight may disappear on its own within a few days.

In your response to vacation weight gain, adopt a gradual and consistent approach rather than crash dieting, meal skipping or overdoing exercise. Prioritize regular balanced meals, adequate hydration, proper sleep and gentle body movements to rebuild your routine.

To help you stay fit while travelling, thus pay heed to the above-mentioned aspects and healthy travel tips. Remember, dealing with vacation weight gain is all about striking a balance between enjoyment, mindful eating and movement.
