People are also getting increasingly curious to know more about protein sources in India, particularly whey and pea protein. While whey protein remains a popular dairy based option for muscle support, pea protein is preferred amongst vegans and individuals with lactose-intolerance.
When it comes to understanding the protein sources in depth, whether it is animal or plant protein, knowing how each protein source differs is important. Consuming adequate protein daily benefits your entire body and, as it promotes satiety, it helps you feel fuller for a longer period, thereby helping in weight management. The protein requirements depend on age, gender and activity level. Growing children and adolescents need adequate protein in their diet to support the rapid growth, healthy brain development, immune function and hormonal changes that occur during puberty.[1] While adults need protein to help maintain muscle mass, build and repair body tissues and support body’s everyday metabolic processes. Older adults require protein to prevent age-related muscle loss, maintain physical strength and support overall health.[2]
Despite India being the world’s largest producer of pulses and dairy, many Indians do not consume enough high-quality protein sources.[3] India’s at-home-protein intake comes from plant protein like cereals (rice, wheat, semolina, maida), according to a study done by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW).[4] Since cereals supply 50% of the daily protein intake they have become the primary dietary protein sources in India despite their low-quality amino acid profile and poor digestibility.
What Is Animal Protein?
Animal protein refers to protein that is derived from animal sources such as dairy products, eggs, chicken, meat and fish. As these foods contain all the nine essential amino acids in adequate amounts, they are called complete proteins.[5]
One such example of animal protein is whey protein, a natural protein traditionally derived from cow’s milk during the cheese-making process.[6] It has a uniquely high proportion of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), which aid in improving athletic performance, preventing fatigue and supporting muscle metabolism (energy production and maintenance of muscle tissue). Whey protein is rapidly digested and contains branched amino acids, especially leucine, which supports muscle protein synthesis and also reduces muscle soreness and fatigue.[7] Many fitness enthusiasts and athletes thereby prefer whey protein supplements to help them meet their daily protein requirements when dietary intake is insufficient.
However, not all animal protein sources are considered healthy. Eggs,chicken, fish and low-fat dairy are better choices than red meat and processed meats. Red meat is high in saturated fat while processed meats are high in sodium, preservatives and additives.
What Is Plant Protein?
Plant protein is defined as protein that comes from plant sources such as cereals, pulses, lentils, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds. They are considered incomplete as they do not provide essential amino acids in sufficient amounts required by the human body. However, plant proteins like soybeans, pea and grains (quinoa and amaranth), are of better quality.[8] In addition, plant-derived proteins lower the risk of several metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, cancer and heart-related disorders.
While considering animal protein vs plant protein, plant protein sources are naturally low in saturated fat and contain no cholesterol. Amongst protein sources in India, plant-based proteins like pea protein is also finding widespread acceptance. It is considered a high-quality protein that is obtained from yellow peas. Pea protein is easy to digest, and a dairy-free alternative to whey protein, providing a good amounts of essential amino acids (lysine and threonine), although it is deficient in methionine and cysteine. It contains bioactive compounds which possess antioxidant activity and have also been associated with antihypertensive and anti-inflammatory properties.8
Animal Protein vs. Plant Protein: Key Differences
When considering animal vs plant protein sources, animal protein has higher digestibility and excellent amino acid quality.[9] This makes them particularly beneficial for athletes, growing children, and people recovering from illness.
In contrast, protein present in plant sources is not of great quality when consumed alone. However, pairing them with a cereal such as rice or wheat flour can create a balanced amino acid profile. A few examples include dal khichdi, dal paratha, idli, dosa, or lentils with rice, etc.
Besides good quality protein, animal protein sources naturally offer other nutrients such as vitamin B12 and haeme iron (highly bioavailable). Unlike them, plant protein sources do not naturally provide vitamin B12 and contain non-haeme iron, which is poorly absorbed.[10] Plant foods, unlike animal protein sources offer fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals that support heart and gut health.
Which Protein Sources Are Best for Different Diets?
Here are some suitable protein sources to be consumed as per the different dietary patterns:
- Vegetarian: milk, curd, paneer, Greek yogurt, soy foods, lentils, beans, legumes, and eggs (if preferred).
- Vegan (no-animal derived foods): pulses, legumes, soybean, quinoa.
- Non-vegetarian: dairy, chicken, eggs, fish, lean meat, legumes, soy foods
- Pescatarian (vegetarian with fish and seafood): Fish, dairy, eggs, soy foods, legumes.[11]
Can You Combine Animal and Plant Protein?
Certainly, combining the two protein options can help improve the overall nutritional quality of the diet. With the animal protein sources improving the amino acid profile, the plant sources provide the heart-healthy, low fat and high fiber benefit. A few healthy combinations that include animal with plant protein sources along with carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fiber are as follows:
- Curd +Rajma + Rice
- Egg kofta curry (boiled egg encased in chana dal mixture)+chapati
- Minced chicken keema with peas +chapati
- Shami kebab (minced chicken+chana dal)+ vegetable +chapati

Each protein source has unique benefits, and along with consuming them in adequate amounts, the right choice depends on factors such as medical conditions, dietary preferences, nutritional needs and fitness goals.
