Hydration Before, During, and After Exercise
Before exercise: Start your workout well hydrated with regular water intake, instead of drinking a lot just before exercising. Aim for about 500–600 mL of water or a sports drink 2–3 hours before exercise, followed by another 200–300 mL about 10–20 minutes before you begin.
During exercise: Sip fluids regularly, especially if you are sweating a lot or exercising in hot weather. You can have around 200–300 mL every 10–20 minutes during longer or more intense workouts.
After exercise: Replace the fluids, you lost through sweating. Drink water regularly after your workout and include electrolytes when you have had a long, intense session or have been sweating heavily. The goal is to feel refreshed and rehydrated, rather than trying to drink a large amount all at once.
Common Hydration Mistakes Athletes Make
- Waiting until you feel very thirsty: Thirst can be a sign that you already need fluids. Sip water regularly during exercise.
- Drinking too much water: More water is not always better. Drinking excessive amounts can impact the body's fluid and salt balance.
- Ignoring electrolytes: During long workouts or heavy sweating, you may also lose electrolytes. Sports drinks may be useful in these situations.
- Following the same routine everywhere: Your fluid needs can change with the weather, exercise intensity, and how much you sweat.
