Proteins are present in every tissue in the human body. Proteins have a lot of important functions like it helps in growth, regulates metabolism, supports immunity, and has a role in recovery and tissue repair as well.[1]That is why getting enough protein is important at every stage of life, whether you are child, an adult, physically active or ageing.[2] Understanding the differences in Indian diet vs Western diet can help us understand why many people struggle to meet their daily protein intake in India

Understanding the Indian Diet

Although Indian nutrition is diverse and is mostly based on cereals, pulses, vegetables, fruits, dairy, nuts, and region-specific foods, it is high in carbohydrates and a large proportion of energy intake comes from low-quality carbohydrates, including refined cereals such as white rice, milled grains, and added sugars. Protein rich foods like pulses, dairy, eggs, fish, and meat are consumed in smaller quantities or less frequently. Overall, comparing the Indian diet vs Western diet patterns shows that the quantity and quality of protein consumed can vary considerably between these dietary patterns, contributing to the protein gap in India.[3]

Common meal patterns

A typical Indian meal pattern mostly contains cereals like rice, wheat, or millets, which consumes biggest portion of the plate. While protein-rich food like dal, legume, dairy, egg, fish, or meat are commonly included, they are often consumed in smaller quantities compared to cereals which are rich in carbohydrates.

Breakfast is often carbohydrate-rich, with foods such as poha, idli, upma, paratha, or bread, providing most of the calories, unless paired with milk, curd, eggs, or sprouts. Similarly, lunch and dinner may include a serving of dal or curd, but the amount of protein consumed at each meal is less. Some commonly consumed snacks like biscuits, namkeen, chips, and sweets are both high in fat and refined carbohydrates. They are also very low in protein hence may not keep you full for longer periods and may also lead to weight gain if consumed frequently.

Indian diets can provide adequate calories but the quantity and distribution of protein throughout the day may not always meet the body’s needs.[4],[5]

Protein consumption challenges

Meeting daily protein requirements can be challenging for many people which can increase the risk of protein deficiency. Busy lifestyle, skipping meals, reliance on convenience foods, limited knowledge about protein needs, food preferences, and cost can all contribute to inadequate protein intake. Meeting protein needs can be even more challenging for people with increased protein needs like athletes, older people, critically ill patients as they often require higher amount of protein to support muscle maintenance, recovery, wound healing, and overall health. Understanding the Western Diet

One of the major differences between Indian diet vs western diet is the amount and frequency of protein rich foods included in daily meals. Western-diet is high in animal-based protein like poultry, meat, fish, eggs, and dairy, along with higher consumption of processed foods. Compared to the traditional Indian diet, their diets are higher in protein and they occupy a larger portion of meals. Hence it is easier for them to meet their protein requirement.

Along with protein their diet is also associated with higher intake of saturated fat, sodium, added sugar, and ultra-processed foods, which may increase the risk of obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Processed meats like hams, sausages, and salami are also consumed very frequently which further contributes to these conditions. Therefore, although the western diet is higher in protein, the quality and the balance of the overall diet should be prioritized to support good health. [7]

Higher protein consumption

Western Diets provide more protein because protein-rich foods like eggs, dairy, poultry, fish, and lean meat are included in almost every meal. Protein intake is also more evenly distributed throughout the day, which has been associated with better muscle protein synthesis, improved satiety, and maintenance of lean muscle mass.[8]

Protein-rich foods include animal-based protein foods like eggs, chicken, fish, milk and dairy products whereas plan protein sources include pulses, legumes, soy products.

Comparing Protein Intake Levels

The comparison of Indian diet vs western diet highlights an important difference in the amount of protein people consume every day, particularly Protein contributes a larger proportion of total energy intake in western countries than in India. In India, cereals account for a significant share of daily protein intake, whereas animal-source foods contribute a greater proportion in many western diets. Hence, the protein consumption is higher among the western populations than Indian, contributing to the protein gap in India.3,7

Why India Faces a Protein Gap

Traditional Indian meals are mostly cereal-based, with rice, wheat, or millets making up the biggest portion of the plate. Protein-rich foods like pulses, dairy, eggs, fish, and meat are eaten in smaller amount. Hence it is easy to get enough calories but becomes difficult to meet the protein target. Vegetarian diets are also common in India. Therefore, it is easy to get enough calories but the protein intake becomes a challenge. Other factors like cost and lack of awareness about protein needs lead to low protein intake gap in India. Together, these factors make it difficult for many Indians to meet their daily protein needs and may lead to protein deficiency.3,4,5

How Indians Can Increase Protein Intake

Indians can increase their protein intake by simply adding at least one source of protein-rich foods like dal, curd, paneer, eggs, soy, fish, or lean meat as a part of Indian nutrition in every meal. Pair cereals with pulses, such as rice with dal or roti with chickpeas, and choose snacks like roasted chana, Greek yoghurt, nuts, or milk instead of processed snacks. It is also important to distribute the protein evenly throughout the day including snacks. Including protein rich snacks like a protein bar can be convenient and an easy way to include protein.

Indian diet vs western diet may be different in many ways especially in terms of protein. Even though western diets usually contain more proteins, Indian diets can match up if the meals are planned thoroughly. Whether you follow an Indian or western diet, the goal is to eat a balanced diet. Overall having a healthy and balanced diet with high quality protein, fibre, healthy fats and other nutrients by including all the food groups in right quantities can help to meet the body’s daily protein requirement, reduce protein deficiency and support Indian nutrition.
