Know Your Body Type - Ectomorph, Mesomorph or Endomorph

Some people have difficulty losing weight, while some may find it challenging to gain weight even if they eat sufficiently. This variation is attributed to genetic and metabolic factors that define their body types. Knowing different body types can offer a simple way to understand the differences in body shape and composition. The three different somatotypes (body types) are ectomorph body type, mesomorph body type and endomorph body type. Understanding them in detail can also shed light on other aspects, like whether you can possess more than one body type and how to optimize your workout plan using body type workout to achieve your fitness goals.

What Is a Body Type?

Every human is unique because of their body types. A person’s body type depends upon muscle mass and fat distribution. In the 1940s, an American psychologist William H. Sheldon classified body types into three somatotypes: ectomorph, endomorph and mesomorph. A person usually attains a defined body type after puberty, but this can change based on activity level, dietary habits and other major lifestyle and hormonal changes.[i]

Ectomorph Body Type: They are often naturally lean, and usually tall with relatively low body fat. Due to their lean build and higher metabolism, people with an ectomorph body type often find it hard to gain weight and muscles. The characteristics of an ectomorph body type include:[ii]

·         Long and relatively thin limbs

·         Narrow and flat chest[iii]

·         Narrower shoulders and hips relative to height

·         Small body frame

·         Less muscular appearance

As compared to other body types, ectomorphs have a lower percentage of muscle mass, which can impact their strength and physical performance. They need to focus more on building and increasing muscle mass with strength training.

Mesomorph Body Type: They appear naturally athletic and have more muscles than fat. People with a mesomorph body type lose or gain weight quickly in response to the changes in their diet and workout routines. The characteristics of a mesomorph body type are as follows:[iv]

·         Broad chest and athletic musculature

·         Shoulders wider than the hips

·         Moderate to large skeletal frame

·         Greater ease gaining muscles

A recent study found that mesomorphs had the highest levels of body composition components (muscle, bone, fat-free mass and water) as compared to other somatotypes.[v] Since they are naturally muscular, they need to focus on maintaining their muscle mass while keeping fat levels low with a balance of cardio exercises and strength training.

Endomorph Body Type: They naturally appear to be stockier and have a curvier physique. People with endomorph body type may find it easier to gain weight than lose and carry more stored fat than muscle mass when not actively training and managing their diet. The endomorph body type possesses the following characteristics:[vi]

·         Rounded shoulders, broad face and a short neck

·         Larger waist and abdomen

·         Tends to store fat more easily, particularly around the abdomen, hips and thighs.

They should focus on losing body fat with resistance training and plyometrics (exercises that involve jumping movements).6

Can You Have More Than One Body Type?

Yes, having characteristics of more than one somatotype is common, as most people fall within a spectrum rather than fitting into a single rigid category. For example, a person can belong to two somatotypes, i.e. having a combination of ectomorph and mesomorph or endomorph and mesomorph.[vii] For instance, a mesomorphic male can gain weight and display endomorphic traits or could be on the leaner side like an ectomorph, with a high metabolism.

Besides diet, training, age and lifestyle changes also shift how your body composition varies within your genetic limits. These changes do not mean that a person has “transitioned” from one somatotype to another, but they reflect normal changes in body composition.

How to Build a Fitness Plan Based on Your Body Type

Identifying the dominant traits can help build a fitness plan that suits an individual’s goals, preferences and their body types for an ideal approach.

·         Ectomorph body type training: They have an active metabolism and therefore should focus on doing less cardio as it can burn too many calories, hindering muscle gain.6 For their body type workout, starting with warm-ups, the following aspects need emphasis:[viii]

o   Heavy weightlifting with lower repetitions

o   Compound exercises such as squats, bench press and deadlifts

o   Limited or low-intensity cardio exercises such as walking, gentle aerobics or cycling at an easy pace

o   Longer rest periods between sets are highly essential since their bodies need time to repair and build up

For balanced nutrition, they need a high calorie, protein-dense diet along with complex carbohydrates to support muscle growth.

·         Mesomorph body type training: 8 Their training requires a balanced approach to build or maintaining muscles. It includes:

o   Starting with a warm-up session that involves light stretching of the muscles.

o   Opting for moderate to heavy weightlifting. This can be done 3-5 times a week, focusing on each muscle group.[ix]

o   Going for a combination of compound exercises and isolation exercises such as bicep curls, lateral raises and triceps extensions.

o   Moderate intensity cardio activities (e.g.  jogging, swimming, climbing stairs)

They need a balanced diet comprising complex carbohydrates, adequate protein and healthy fats to maintain their physique.

·         Endomorph Body Type training: 8 Due to their tendency to gain weight easily, they need to put in extra effort to see the desired results. The training includes warm-ups with a focus on the following considerations:

o   Moderate weight-lifting with higher repetitions

o   High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) will help burn fat, maintain muscle mass, and improve cardiovascular fitness

o   Moderate to high intensity cardio activities like brisk walking, running and cycling to aid weight loss

They require a calorie-controlled diet with an adequate amount of protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats for healthy weight management.

Body types are thus descriptive concepts of a person’s physical framework and other traits. When considered along with a balanced diet, suitable body type workout, and adequate recovery, somatotypes can pave the way for supporting your long-term fitness and help in achieving sustainable results.
