The Benefits of Strength Training for Women

Exercise is often associated with activities like walking, running, cycling etc. However, strength training deserves a place in the routine too. Strength training for women’s fitness can be useful at different stages of life. It can help make everyday movements easier. It can also be useful when the goal is to lose body fat without losing too much muscle. Strength workout benefits can include improved muscle strength, better physical function, stronger bones and support for maintaining lean muscle.

What is Strength Training?

Strength training is a type of exercise in which the muscles work against resistance. The resistance makes the muscles work harder than they would during normal movement. You do not have to lift extremely heavy weights to get started. Beginners can start with bodyweight exercises or lighter weights. Squats, lunges, push-ups, rows and shoulder presses are some common examples. The resistance can then be increased as strength improves. The important part is consistency.

Benefit 1: Increased Metabolism

Muscle requires energy to maintain itself. This is one reason why muscle building can influence how much energy the body uses. Strength training during weight loss helps preserve and build muscle while you lose body fat. When you are trying to lose weight, the goal is to reduce body fat while preserving as much muscle as possible. This is where fat loss and strength training can help. Strength training helps burn calories, leading to fat loss while also supporting muscle retention during this process. Cutting a lot of calories or losing weight very quickly can also lead to significant muscle loss. Hence, adding strength exercises to your routine can help prevent this muscle loss while supporting fat loss.

If fat loss is your goal, a combination of regular physical activity that includes aerobic activity and strength training along with a diet that provides enough protein and other essential nutrients will be helpful.[2]

Benefit 3: Stronger Bones

Bone health can be easy to overlook when you are young because there may be no obvious signs of weakness. However, bone health becomes increasingly important with age. Women’s fitness becomes important as women are at a greater risk of bone loss after menopause as estrogen levels decline. This makes strength training important part of maintaining bone health.

Strength training exercises for postmenopausal women are found to be associated with improvements in bone mineral density. This is one more reason to include strength exercises throughout adulthood rather than waiting until later in life. Good nutrition matters here too. Adequate calcium, vitamin D and protein are all important for supporting strong bones and muscles.[3],[4]

Benefit 4: Enhanced Daily Function

You use your muscles all day, even when you are not exercising. Carrying a suitcase, lifting a child, climbing stairs, getting up from a low chair or carrying grocery bags all need some level of strength. Strength training can make everyday tasks such as climbing stairs, lifting and carrying objects feel easier.

Women’s fitness becomes even more important as they get older, as maintaining muscle strength can help them remain active and independent. Middle-aged and older women are found to have improvements in strength and physical function following resistance training.[5]

Sitting for long hours can make you feel stiff, especially around the back, shoulders and hips. Over time, you may also notice that some movements do not feel as easy as they used to. Strength training can support better posture by strengthening the muscles that help keep your spine and joints properly aligned. Exercises that target the back, shoulders, core and glutes can also improve stability and body control. Squats, rows, glute bridges and planks are examples of exercises that can help. Adding a few stretching and mobility exercises can also help you move more comfortably and reduce stiffness.[6],[7]

Benefit 6: Improved Confidence and Mental Health

Strength training can also make you feel better about yourself. You may notice that you are able to lift a little more weight or do an exercise more easily than you could a few weeks ago. Even small improvements like these can feel good and encourage you to keep going.

For many women, exercise can become less about weight or appearance and more about feeling stronger and fitter. Research suggests that strength training may support mental well-being, although it should not replace professional help when needed.[8],[9]

How Often Should Women Strength Train?

There is no single workout schedule that will suit every woman. For someone starting out, two to three strength-training sessions a week is a reasonable target. Allow enough recovery between harder sessions, especially when you are new to strength training.

A basic workout can cover the major muscle groups. This could include a squat or lunge for the legs, a pushing exercise, a pulling exercise, a hip-focused movement and a core exercise.

The amount of weight is less important in the beginning than learning how to perform the exercises properly. Once the exercises become easier, the resistance can gradually be increased.[10]
